The Six Rooms
Gallery
26 Argyle Street,
Birkenhead, Wirral CH41 6AE
This year sees the return of the Liverpool Biennial,
featuring work by invited UK and International artists. The Independents
Biennial runs alongside this major event, showcasing UK-based artists,
but also involving multiple exhibitions and events around Merseyside.
The Six Rooms Gallery is a temporary exhibition space which was set up
with the intention of extending the 6th Liverpool Biennial across the
water to Wirral, as part of the Independents sector.
The idea of exhibiting away from Liverpool, came through monthly networking
meetings for visual creative people based in Wirral. The 'With These Hands'
group was set up by Alison Bailey Smith, and one of the many topics raised
during the discussions was the lack of exhibition space in the area.
Theresia Cadwallader, founder of The Six Rooms Gallery, tells us how
she found the unique gallery space:
I am a regular at the Capitol Restaurant,
Argyle St., Birkenhead, and one day I spotted that the building next door
was empty. I like the location because it is on the main street, well
catered by public transport and easy to park. Finding the owner of the
property, I was able to view the space and discuss its new use as a gallery
Previously, the building was used as Drawing
and Surveyor's Offices. The building is spacious and has lots of natural
lighting, and still retains many period features, including beautiful
Victorian hand painted tiles in the courtyard. I could see the buildings'
potential as a gallery and how it could be transformed with just a coat
of paint, on our limited budget.
With a combination
of established and new, emerging artists and designers, the group will
celebrate the notion of bringing new art, craft, design and architecture
together in one space, exploring the ways in which the artists are able
to respond to the Biennial's theme of 'Touched', in their own personal
way.
Exhibiting alongside the artists are both Ainsley Gommon Architects,
who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, and the winners
of an art competition organised by Birkenhead Youth Club.
The exhibitions aim to connect with the public by having artists on hand
to talk about their own work and free workshops will be run during the
exhibition period. The exhibitions will run from 14th September until
28th November. Admission is free.
To make the best use of the space for the 30 + artists the work will
be split into three groups.
Exhibition Dates:
· Group 1: 14th September - 5th October 2010
· Group 2: 8th October -31st October 2010
· Group 3: 4th November - 28th November 2010
