Business Booming for Crafty Birkenhead Company

7/10/2014

A ‘crafty’ Birkenhead business is becoming so popular that it has now increased the size of its business unit for the third time this year.

Inkymits is owned by mixed media artist Maria Simms, who sells craft sets and products and runs popular workshops to teach people how to make the most of their creative side. Maria, 44, from Prenton, also regularly appears on TV shopping channels, demonstrating craft products.

Based at Bizspace’s Price Street Business Centre, Maria has recently moved into her third unit at the site since January this year. Within just a few months, the mum-of-two has been able to double the size of her premises as her business takes off.

Maria first began crafting after she became ill and had to leave her career in healthcare. She took it up as a hobby to keep her busy and soon realised she had a natural talent. She started posting pictures of her creations on social media and found herself being approached by several manufacturers and retailers asking her to work for them, showcasing their products.

“I took up crafting as I was looking for a hobby to keep me occupied while I was housebound. It is incredible how far things have come since then,” she said.

“I joined some groups on Facebook and uploaded pictures of my work. That’s how I got into appearing on shopping channels.”

Maria regularly appears on Create and Craft and Ideal World shopping channels, which she has done for three years. But she is always happiest holding workshops to encourage others to try out new creative ideas. Crafting is the UK’s fastest growing hobby and Maria’s products and workshops are proving a huge hit.

“The team at Bizspace, in particular the manager of Price Street Business Centre, Neil Williamson, has been fantastic. Neil understood exactly the type of premises I was looking for and has been so helpful during both my moves,” Maria said.

Neil added: “It’s great to see Inkymits doing so well. Maria is so passionate about her work and we are all so pleased for her.”

Bizspace’s sales and marketing director, Emma Long, echoed Neil’s words.

“Bizspace is committed to supporting start-up businesses like Inkymits and helping them to grow successfully. It is fantastic for us to play a part in success stories such as Maria’s,” she said.
