Pax Republic Convention

An interesting art and social issues event is due to take place at the Black-E Arts Centre in Liverpool.

The Pax Republic Convention is the first phase of the launch of a new transnational community building project which aims to unite Liverpool based artists, academics, faith based groups, students, filmmakers, poets, musicians, theatre, dance and business people with communities in Cape Town, Istanbul, Guadalajara and London.

The initial phase will last for five years, each year the convention will take place in one of the cities mentioned, and this year, Liverpool is the home and birthplace of this revolutionary series of events.

The Pax Republic Convention is free and there are no age limitations, no barriers, no exclusions, everyone is invited. It starts on Saturday the 1st of April and runs until Wednesday the 8th of April. To view the Pax website and check what's on and when, go to www.paxconvention.com

There will be:

• Live Performances from Urban Strawberry Lunch, Drum Planet, The Sense of Sound Choir, The Trestles, The Ian Prowse band and others...
• An unmissable collaborative concert by Shzr Ee from the Royal Holloway, Antony Burrage from the Royal Philarmonic and the outstanding virtuoso, Virgil Shraqya.
• Two workshops are scheduled to take place: The "Decode Me" workshop, led by the 'Art in Regeneration' team (Granby Adult Learning Centre), who will engage 60 pupils, from 6 secondary schools, and the 'Through my Eyes' workshop, who will work with a homeless group. The aim being to eliminate stereotypes and discrimination.
• Art events: including an installation on the topic of ‘DNA’ and works from internationally known artists, such as internet phenomenons Mark America, Stanza and Heath Bunton.
• Film screenings led by the Liverpool Film Festival team from up-and-coming filmmakers. These include full features, shorts and documentaries from all over the world. There are also Q&A sessions with the directors afterwards.
• Poetry and Storytelling evening dubbed ‘Bridges not walls’ and led by Val Walsh together with 12 poets and writers.
• Dance performances include choreographies by Hope University Dance Department, led by Sarah Blacke; and also Adele Slachmuylders, Genome by the Greenhouse project children and Yellow House, who will be performing an ‘Invisible Theatre’ piece.
• There is also a Two Day Pax Conference being held as part of the events taking place. There are a whole host of cross-sector experts and grass roots people from the city taking part. They will discuss a range of issues relevant to the people of Liverpool and the wider community with the objective of collectively addressing the communities needs. Issues up for discussion include, crime in the city, fighting drug abuse, unresolved issues relating to interculturalism, deprivation, housing, art and education.
• Interfaith debates will be held by Rev. Shannon Ledbetter, who will bring together young people from different faith groups, who will together attempt to debate and create a manifesto of faith for the city. Afterwards there will be a tour of places of religious worship in Liverpool.

• There is also a drop-in activities event, led by members of the Liverpool National Museum - they will engage the public in reflecting on what links already exist between the PAX REPUBLIC cities.
