An
Interview with Tibi and her cello
By - Saturday 2nd April 2011
The
at Liverpool’s
saw many artists perform to an appreciative crowd of people but when Spain’s
Tibi & her cello performed an electrifying and impressive set the
people in the room were in numbers not seen since the opening night of
the event. Those who have seen Tibi & her cello in the live setting
before will nod their heads in complete understanding of that fact and
if you haven’t yet had the pleasure to catch Tibi and her very lovely
cello in action yet, get down to one of the many shows she performs in
Liverpool.
Following the performance, and amid the mutterings of positivity regarding
her talents from the remaining guests, she approached me and asked if
we could do the interview I had suggested a few weeks before. Of course,
I said yes. So it was that the side of FACT’s latest café
became the venue for our conversation on all of manner of topics from
the show, the music to the differences between her native Madrid and the
city where she has lived for the past few years. That city is, of course,
Liverpool.
Our chat began with the show that had wowed the crowd at The Insurrection
so much they were seemingly speechless afterwards. ‘I really enjoyed
it! We played for the first time in Liverpool in an acoustic way and I’m
very happy because everyone was quiet with smiley faces. Very nice!’
She looks even more pleased when I mention that it’s the busiest
we’ve been since the Launch and discussion then moves to her highlights
of the show: ‘ Especially with the Spanish song La Vida Sera, people
were clapping along. And it’s great that people enjoy the music
so much! That’s really nice indeed!’
Tibi hails from Madrid, in Spain, and I wonder what differences she found
in Liverpool with her hometown: ‘It’s interesting! When I
first came here it was hard because my English still wasn’t very
good – still I’m fighting that! – But I’m getting
better! Also the weather, food and people – everything is different.
But that doesn’t mean better or worse or anything like that! I’m
really happy in life and I think (Liverpool is) a great place. You can
hear music everywhere and see different live shows every day. I’m
really happy to be here!’
As we speak the sun is shining in from outside and surely that is one
thing she must miss not being in Spain? ‘I started to think that
the weather and the sun especially are so so important!’ The sunny
nature of her home comes across on her excellent E.P. and when I ask her if she has any highlights
from the record she pauses, in thought, then says ‘Difficult. I
can’t choose just one song!’ Another pause; ‘ All of
the songs are special to me but I’m really happy with Because You
Look At Me, which helped prove to me that I could play and sing by myself,
and ‘Could I Stop Rolling’ which I feel really proud of…’
Finally I enquire if she would play at the Insurrection again: ‘Yes!
I really enjoyed it. Of course I would!’ With that, she heads off
into the sunshine leaving memories of an excellent gig and an even more
enjoyable interview. Check out her E.P. “Lost in the sounds…”
as it really is an excellent listen, a perfect match with the sunny weather
surely due to us soon!
