Back to index of Nerve 10 - Spring 2007 Music Profile - Greedy JesusBy Alicia Rose Self-professed superstar Greedy Jesus is enjoying his second coming… the erstwhile frontman of millennium band ComeDown treads the boards of far flung places such as Canada and Scarborough and sings out about the strangest qualities of life. Born a long time ago somewhere in Liverpool he was blessed with the ability to write, play and sing scorching lyrics and melodies. This bearded god describes himself as a humble egotist whose actions are predictably unpredictable and this is true, for when you meet Greedy Jesus, you will remember him. His current album, 'Forever When Measured in Seconds' (released through Testament Records) is a consummate example of cynical narcissism that breathes emotional warmth. Jesus' quality of singing about hope through a toxic life is enlightening. 'Good Intentions' is the oldest song on the album and took the longest to write. Started over seven years ago, it took another five to finish. The chorus was continually re-written for it was never quite right. It's the only piece that remains from the ComeDown band. In contrast 'Smiling While Falling' was written, sung and recorded within fifteen minutes. It's about complete denial, a case of being so deluded that you find yourself happily oblivious to the fact that your life is a mess. Stalkers of Greedy Jesus are commonplace and being the charismatically bearded bard that he is, he invokes interest wherever he plays. This elusive fellow cuts to the chase about friends who don't deliver with 'Friend Like Me', an elemental song which began as an improvisation in a local Wavertree Bar. Greedy gets interactive with his crowd and welcomes their inclusion in his verse. The ability to get voices singing is a special Jesus talent and a crowning glory for forthcoming single, 'Council Kids' (this being a 'best ever' live performance). It's intelligently witty and a well written ode to everyone's inner scally. Recorded with fellow 'Catacoustics' Tony Elliott, Jeff Jepson and Martin McGuffy and produced at TreeHouse, Southport this is a must for all anthem lovers. There is more to 'Greedy' than meets the eye as he transcends through Film and Literature too. The Unhappy Hunchback (HMV) His Master's Video is a Silent Black Comedy about revenge and regret. Shot in Alicante, Spain in 2006 it's the product of 'recreational' activity. Made in association with Killer Miller from UKFM and shot in Black & White with alternative sound overlap, it's a mini masterpiece. The soundtrack is 'Die Alone' (taken from the album) and sparks the sagacious, 'Thoughts creating worlds in seconds, planets form with every sentence. The universe alone is mine; it's left to me to start the fire. Well burn it down for with pain comes freedom, we need to found a new religion. Drug us all, we need release; give us something new to believe in, like Love…' Within his coming, this God of tested temperament has planned 'The Testament
World Tour' to save all souls. |
