25th February 2000: Greenpeace halt shipment of GM maize bound for Liverpool (see also 20th November)
Greenpeace was founded in 1971 by anti-war protesters trying to stop
US nuclear weapons testing in Alaska. It has grown to a worldwide organisation
that confronts environmental abuses and promotes alternatives. It carries
out a wide range of lobbying, public education and consumer campaigning
but is perhaps best known for spectacular interventions to expose the
main environmental offenders.
Campaign targets on Merseyside have been polluters of the Mersey and more
recently the importers of genetically-modified (GM) foods. On 29 November
1996 volunteers scaled the dockside cranes and prevented the first importation
of GM maize for several days. On 25 February 2000 6 climbers boarded the
first ship to bring GM soya beans to the UK and chained themselves to
the anchor. They delayed the ship by a week and gave the authorities a
runaround with other protests when it finally arrived. On 20 November
2000 75 volunteers dressed as chickens halted work at Cargills soya mill
on the docks for a day.
Greenpeace members are invited to join the local group which meets monthly.
