Back to index of Nerve 16 - Summer 2010 Johnson's Acoustic CircusBy Mike Field Johnson's Acoustic Circus was formed out of a songwriters club in Anfield, set up in 1998 by local man Roy Johnson. Like many, Roy had been working on his songs at home, and wanted to share his music and inspire others to create their own. "Songs for the Hunted Little Wax Man" and "The Sky is a Big Hat" give a flavour of Roy's psychedelic humour and generous spirit. Roy talks enthusiastically about the talent alive in our city and of his desire to encourage children to participate in music. 3 years ago Johnson's Music Garden began at Anfield Sports Centre to involve 8-18 year olds in songwriting, poetry, and guitar playing, both at beginners and intermediate levels. Consequently some of his students have gained the self-confidence to start up their own school bands. Johnson's Acoustic Circus's latest cd "Gone in a flash" features Roy on mandolin and ukulele, Dave Lock on acoustic bass, Mike Moon on keyboards and is produced and mixed by Niall Kearney. I caught up with Roy and Niall at their new Open Mic Night at The Flat Iron pub on Oakfield Road, Anfield (Tuesday nights). They have a band performance on Fridays at the same place. Roy highlighted the need for more live venues across the city for original songwriters. To his credit, Steve the manager of the Flat Iron, intends to develop his pub into a community music venue by renovating an upstairs concert room; an ideal hidden gem in the heart of the area. Inspired by his partner Maria and his fellow circus troubadours, Roy continues to inspire and entertain. Catch the Johnson Acoustic Circus when you can! Comments are closed on this article |
