Bhopal
Survivors Tour
The world's worst industrial incident took place in 1984 at Union Carbide's
pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Up to 8,000 people died
in the immediate aftermath of a gas leak from the plant, some 15,000 have
died since, and hundreds of thousands remain affected by the legacy of
the poison. The area around the plant remains polluted by a cocktail of
highly toxic chemicals.
Warren Anderson, American CEO of Union Carbide at the time of the leak,
and Union Carbide itself, since taken over by Dow Chemical Company, remain
absconders from the Indian court. Bhopal survivors are touring to the
UK and Ireland this autumn. They are protesting Dow's Olympics sponsorship,
and the London leg of the trip will coincide with the Paralympics. The
tour is also being seen as the start of a build up to 2014, the 30th anniversary
of the disaster, when there will be events worldwide to mark the devastation
wrought by the gas leak, and to further the struggle for justice for its
victims.
Two survivors of the disaster, along with an interpreter, are visiting
the North West for three days, 20th-24th September. They will be in Liverpool
on the 23rd. Liverpool Trades Union Council have pledged their support
and are helping organise an event for this visit.
