The Egg Space Programme

By Tony Knox

The Egg Space programme aims to support and extend the creativity within the community by supporting artists and their work. Run for and by artists, it provides an opportunity to show work in a gallery context.

During the 2002 biennial, Egg Space exhibitions were extended to two venues. Alongside the Newington Buildings on Newington Street, Liverpool ('the most bohemian place on earth'), a secondary location was used in Blundell Street on the Kings Dock. This enabled the range of work to be more expansive in content and source. The art provides an experience in both the space it occupies and the time it exists, demonstrating a relevance to contemporary life. It is an exploration of the relationship between art and life. Egg Space aims to extend the freedom for exploration and development of new and alternative ideas.

  • broaden the audience for the arts and engage people in the issues affecting artists and their work.
  • promote diversity and equality of opportunity in the arts and to enhance understanding of artists' processes and preoccupations.
  • provide a level of support to the talent within the community and nurture it to a professional level.
  • strengthen cultural diversity, improve quality of life and broaden artistic activity.
  • Expand awareness of a greater range of disciplines, their flexibility, effectiveness and evolution.
  • Sustain an artist-led infrastructure which creates opportunities for artists to show their work in a gallery context.

Egg Space challenges the gap that exists between popular culture and the 'classical 'or 'fine' arts. It examines notions of identity and community. It offers the artist opportunities to develop skills within a challenging and stimulating environment, encouraging new and experimental, and innovative forms of presentation.
