By Colin Serjent

In what is the biggest arts event held in the city, and the UK's largest international festival of contemporary art, the Liverpool Arts Biennial present a diverse and often high quality range of art work spread over a multitude of exhibitions sited at many locations, generally within the city centre.

There are four main strands to what will be the third Liverpool Biennial, which runs from 18 September until 18 November.

International 04
Uniquely among the world's biennials, Liverpool specifically commissions 100% of the artworks shown in International 04. It will involve a collaboration between Liverpool Biennial and Tate Liverpool, Bluecoat Arts Centre, Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) , and the Open Eye Gallery. International 04 will also include works shown in unusual public spaces throughout Liverpool.

The Independent
Multiple exhibitions offer a city-wide counterpoint to the International 04. Independent artists and curators will present a diverse range of shows across the city - in galleries, on the streets, in shop windows and in renovated buildings. Initiated by the afoundation and independent artists and curators.

John Moores 23
Over 1900 painters have entered this year's John Moores competition. The £25,000 prize winner will be announced during the opening of the Liverpool Biennial.
The show is organised by National Museums Liverpool, who are also presenting the first major exhibition of the Stuckists, to be shown at the Walker Art Gallery alongside the John Moores exhibition.

Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2004
