David Singleton,
who paints with his right foot, has had cerebral palsy since birth, and
showed artistic talent from a very young age.

By
At the age of ten, competing with able - bodied children, David Singleton
won a painting prize, which was presented to him by the legendary former
Liverpool footballer Billy Liddell in 1959.
"They could not believe I had painted the picture with my foot,"
said Singleton.
He has always proudly displayed a photograph of himself receiving the
award on a wall of his studio.
Singleton has been a member of the MFPA (Mouth & Foot Painting Artists
Association) since 1967, and studied at Liverpool University in painting
conservation.
His work has been exhibited at the Walker art gallery, The Williamson,
and Liverpool Central Library, as well as other venues, and his paintings
have been published worldwide by the MFPA.
Singleton, who met Christy Brown, the famous author of "My Left Foot",
at an art exhibition, painted his cottage in County Kerry, Ireland during
his twenties, which he considers his favourite piece of work.
He does not believe that having cerebral palsy affects his paintings.
"If I did not have cerebral palsy I would paint in the same way."
Singleton is proud of his association with the MFPA, which has been in
existence for nearly fifty years.
He said, with a knowing glance and a smile, that they keep him waiting
and he is forced to paint Christmas cards, however it does mean that he
has shown his work extensively and has sold most of it.
I have looked through many folders of his impressive body of work. It
is impressionistic in style but is characteristically his own. Poignancy
and a joy shine through his paintings.
I looked at a calendar of MFPA artists from Korea and was startled by
the beauty in their depiction of nature. I also see this in Singleton's
work.
