Back to index of Nerve 8 - Spring 2006 Katherine DoranThe majority of my recent work has been a combination of abstract paintings and drawings, based on random and accidental mark making with more detail added later. Some of my drawings are based on hanging fabrics and paper constructions; these could be viewed as plant or animal/insect forms. For the paintings I work in a different style. They have layering and a gradual building up of images with flowing and blending of colours. They have a similarity to surrealist automatic drawings. The paintings and drawings have an ambiguous quality. I feel that the viewer may possibly see a number of images within them; they are open to interpretation. Some of them resemble abstract landscapes, water and sky. I graduated with BA Hons Fine Art with English from Liverpool Hope University in 2004. During my degree, my work was influenced by Eva Hesse's sculptures, Andre Masson's automatic drawings and paintings, Roberto Matta, Mark Tobey, the colour staining technique of Helen Frankenthaler and Ian McKeever's abstract paintings. I also enjoy doing life drawings and illustration work. I am a member of the Headspace artists group, based at the Eggspace gallery at the Egg café in Liverpool city centre. My work is exhibited on the online gallery www.notquitedry.com
