This is a warm and tender film observing the interaction of three characters
- a middle-aged lorry driver and a young woman with a baby,.
As a favour to his boss Ruben (German De Silva) is giving them a lift
from Paraguay to Buenos Aires, where Jacinta (Hebe Duarte) is going to
work. For the first thirty minutes of the film very little dialogue is
spoken, as the two adults barely acknowledge each other's presence in
the truck.
But the icy silence between them is gradually broken through the lovable
behaviour of the five-month-old toddler Anahi (Nayra Calle Mamani).
Ruben becomes entranced by her, and as a result of this he begins to
bond with Jacinta, which grows into genuine affection for her.
Impressively directed by Pablo Giorgelli (making his debut), iLas Acacias
won the Camera d'Or in Cannes this year, aided by the luscious cinematography
of Diego Poleri. Highly recommended.
