Africa Oyé
Sefton Park, Liverpool
18th & 19th June 2016
Review and photographs by Colin Serjent
Now in its 24th year Africa Oyé was once again a colourful and spectacular feast of music at Sefton Park.
Among the many impressive acts who took part were the kora player Sona Jobarteh; Mbongwana Star, who are all composed of former members of Congolese band, Staff Benda Bilili; Damily, who is originally from Tongobory, southwest of Madagascar, and is renowned as one of the pioneers of the musical genre ‘Tsapiky’.
Others who took part included the Ifa Band, from Tanzania; Mamadou and the Super Libidor Band; and Sherii Ven Dyer, whose music has an Indian, Cuban and Jamaican heritage.
I am sure Africa Oyé Artistic Director Paul Duhaney and his team will have some special acts lined up for the festival’s 25th anniversary event in 2017.
