Moving
On
Moving On With Learning (MOWL) is a study programme aimed at disabled
adults who have a history of poor formal educational achievements and
low aspiration to progress in education, training and employment. The
majority of MOWL students are adults labelled as having learning difficulties
and who are long term users of Social Services day centre provision.
MOWL was established six years ago. In 2003 they moved location within
the University of Liverpool to the Department of Sociology, Social Policy
and Social Work. The Department already having a strong reputation for
relevant, original, and critical and applied social science education
and research sees MOWL's arrival as the start of an exciting new partnership.
MOWL provides a respect based learning environment where students can
achieve Oxford and Cambridge RSA qualifications in Communication, Information
Technology and Number skills. The flexibility of these qualifications
allows students to progress at their own individual pace. The programme
of study also contains non-accredited aspects such as advocacy, confidence
raising and support in the development of progression routes.
MOWL makes
a key contribution to teaching and learning for all students within the
department, in particular those studying for professional social work
qualifications. MOWL students already contribute to formal teaching and
the programme offers practice placement opportunities. Social work students
are accepted as volunteers with the programme for the period of their
study in the department.
MOWL welcomes volunteers to work with our staff to support our students
and gain valuable experiences and enjoy the pleasant and respectful atmosphere
we provide here in the University.
MOWL's teaching and Learning Team deliver sessions from Tuesday through
to Friday every week, if you wish to know more about the MOWL project
